چکیده

We present a quantitative assessment of the local and long-range horizontal connections within two separate models of layer 4 and layer 2/3 of the striate cortex. Connections between the orientation minicolumns, building the models, are developed during exposure to visual input. Layer 4 long-range horizontal connections target all orientation domains in a balanced manner, whereas local connections are biased towards the isoorientation domain. However, both local and long-range horizontal connections of the layer 2/3 network are biased towards the iso-orientation domains. We hypothesize that the patchy layout of the layer 2/3 longrange connections is a consequence of excitatory cells targeting mainly other excitatory cells located in distal iso-orientation domains. Furthermore, both networks demonstrate dense local and sparse distal connectivity.

Organization of long-range inhibitory connections with rat visual cortex.

We have studied the laminar organization of local long-range inhibitory connections within rat primary visual cortex (area 17) by combining retrograde tracing of nerve cell bodies with glutamic acid decarboxylase immunocytochemistry. While most inhibitory connections are confined to within 0.4 mm of the injection site, a subset of neurons at the layer 5/6 border provide long-range (> 1 mm) inhi...

Long-range dichoptic interactions in the human visual cortex in the region corresponding to the blind spot.

The region of the visual field of one eye that corresponds to the blind spot of the contralateral eye is believed to be monocular. We measured dichoptic contour interaction in this region of the visual field in humans by having observers report the orientation of a test letter "T" presented to this region, in the presence of flanking T's presented around the blind spot of the fellow eye. A larg...

Circuits for local and global signal integration in primary visual cortex.

Contrast-dependent changes in spatial summation and contextual modulation of primary visual cortex (V1) neuron responses to stimulation of their receptive field reveal long-distance integration of visual signals within V1, well beyond the classical receptive field (cRF) of single neurons. To identify the cortical circuits mediating these long-distance computations, we have used a combination of...

Dynamics of collinear contrast facilitation are consistent with long-range horizontal striate transmission

It is well established that activity of striate neurons may be either facilitated or suppressed by visual stimuli presented outside of their classical receptive field (CRF) limits. Whilst two general mechanisms have been identified as candidates for these contextual effects; those based on extra-striate feedback and long-range horizontal striate connections; the physiological data supporting th...

The functional geometry of local and horizontal connections in a model of V1.

A mathematical model of interacting hypercolumns in primary visual cortex (V1) is presented that incorporates details concerning the geometry of local and long-range horizontal connections. Each hypercolumn is modeled as a network of interacting excitatory and inhibitory neural populations with orientation and spatial frequency preferences organized around a pair of pinwheels. The pinwheels are...
